"Tear Catcher"(2018)

Video Installation, Two-channel video

In recent years, the number of foreigners living in Japan has been increasing. Among them I found a newspaper article about the shortage of cemeteries for Muslims. What does it mean to have no place to stay after death? Death comes to everyone. It is a universal theme, just like family. In Japan, too, family lifestyles are changing dramatically today, and so are the graves. We have to consider the future shortage of cemeteries and the problem of who will inherit the graves. I am also interested in the concept of death and mourning, and in this work I would like to consider universal issues from Islamic cemeteries. When I read materials on graves, many of them evolved from sociology and folklore to family theory. Isn't it possible to think about the family in terms of graves? For example, it seems to me that we can see inside people's minds when they bring to the grave what they could not achieve in this life, or when they want to be in the grave with their family. The shape of the grave, the inscriptions on the grave, and the flowers that have been placed on the grave also reveal the portrait of the deceased. I sometimes feel that graves are like portraits. I think of photographs and songs as a way of remembering home. While living in Japan, I am also interested in what kind of homeland Muslims remember.
